Leading up to the season, we will be featuring testimonials from some of our umpires, which we hope will inspire you to consider joining the Blue Crew this year.

This week we are featuring Sarah Talach!

What initially motivated you to volunteer as an umpire for PHBA?

I initially signed up to be an umpire when my family transitioned to PHBA in 2023. Our coach request went out in TeamSnap for my younger son’s team and umpire was a job in need of being filled. To be completely honest – I had no idea what I was getting myself into as I had never attended a PHBA game before this first season.

What have been some of the most rewarding moments you’ve had while umpiring?

A proud mom of two boys, I have continued to umpire to inspire young athletes and challenge stereotypes. I believe that understanding the game, making sound judgments, and communicating effectively have nothing to do with gender.

Over the last 3 seasons of umpiring, I have advanced in levels and this has brought different challenges and learning opportunities. I enjoy umpiring in the Pioneer level and have gotten behind the plate a few times for Pioneer Softball. I still smile when I get a look of surprise from a softball player when I’m standing behind the plate to officiate the game.

What kind of training and support did you receive, and how did it prepare you for the role?

PHBA has a strong umpire program and they do a thorough job of assuring umpires are prepared.  The ULT is supportive as are many higher level umpires and they’re always willing to answer questions and expand your understanding of the game.

What would you say to someone who is on the fence about volunteering as an umpire?

If you love the game, try umpiring! It’s one of the best ways to stay close to the action, build confidence, and make a difference for young athletes. You don’t have to be perfect — just passionate, fair, and willing to learn.
