Umpire Testimonial: Nathan McKnight
Leading up to the season, we will be featuring testimonials from some of our umpires, which we hope will inspire you to consider joining the Blue Crew this year.
This testimonial will focus on Nathan McKnight!
What initially motivated you to volunteer as an umpire for PHBA?
We were late signing up for the various duties to support my son’s team, so my wife signed me up for the only thing remaining; umpire. That was seven years ago. My son has aged out but I keep coming back because it’s such a rewarding experience.
What have been some of the most rewarding moments you’ve had while umpiring?
I love a great call, one that really requires paying attention to everything happening on the field and matching that up with the rules. It’s fun on the field and it’s fun to talk about at the snack shack after the game.
What kind of training and support did you receive, and how did it prepare you for the role?
I started as a complete newbie with zero experience, including not having played baseball myself. The pre-season basic training and support throughout the season from fellow umpires was fantastic!
I started off on base-only in the lower divisions my first year and learned to love the role. I came back my second year and trained for plate and worked up my skills and experience to work all the divisions. Based on my training and experience at PHBA, I’ve also been working as an umpire for travel softball tournaments.
What would you say to someone who is on the fence about volunteering as an umpire?
Just give it a try. The support at PHBA is great: from the training that will get you grounded to the partner that will have your back out on the field. Being an umpire gives you the best seat in house for watching the game. If it’s not your thing, it’s a short commitment, but you may find you love it and keep coming back for more.
