Leading up to the season, we will be featuring testimonials from some of our umpires, which we hope will inspire you to consider joining the Blue Crew this year.

This testimonial will focus on Matthew Gebhardt!

What initially motivated you to volunteer as an umpire for PHBA?

My motivation to start umpiring came from my son’s team not having someone to volunteer to umpire while my wife was the team coordinator. I had seen how PHBA was run and I was willing to try something new in a sport I had never played.

What have been some of the most rewarding moments you’ve had while umpiring?

The most rewarding thing I get from umpiring is seeing how the players progress and improve throughout the season and the different perspective of the game being on the field vs the in the stands.

What kind of training and support did you receive, and how did it prepare you for the role?

When it comes to training, PHBA is fantastic. From day one, they supply the necessary training for new umpires to feel comfortable and confident out on the field. The ULT and the veteran umpires are also always available for questions and concerns.

What would you say to someone who is on the fence about volunteering as an umpire?

When it comes to someone thinking about volunteering as a PHBA umpire, just do it for the kids and the experience. You will not be disappointed.
