Umpire Testimonial: Jane Thibedeau

Leading up to the season, we will be featuring testimonials from some of our umpires, which we hope will inspire you to consider joining the Blue Crew this year.
This testimonial will focus on Jane Thibedeau!
What initially motivated you to volunteer as an umpire for PHBA?
As with many people, I became an umpire because there was a need for one on my granddaughter’s Softball American team. She had been playing with PHBA for four years and neither my husband nor I had stepped up to tackle a major volunteer position. It was time. With assurance from the Commissioner and Team Coach that I could do the job, I signed on, even though I had only a rudimentary knowledge of the rules.
What have been some of the most rewarding moments you’ve had while umpiring?
The PHBA program is all about the kids and ensuring that they have fun and are successful while playing the game. It is so rewarding to be in the field, watching the kids develop their skills, mentor and encourage each other, develop friendships, and become a team as the season progresses.
What kind of training and support did you receive, and how did it prepare you for the role?
The required pre-season training sessions are excellent, providing on-the-field mock games and answers to all questions. Because I was so green, I went to two training sessions and was supported and mentored all season by more experienced umpires. I was never made to feel inept and was treated with kindness and professionalism by players, coaches, parents and umpires all season.
What would you say to someone who is on the fence about volunteering as an umpire?
If even someone with my limited knowledge of the game can be successful, anyone can be. I learned so much and met so many dedicated, kind people. My granddaughter was very proud that I was an umpire. The rewards outweigh the time commitment, and there is no better place to be a part of the game and support the kids of the PHBA community.
