Umpire Testimonial: Mark Surawski
Leading up to the 2025 season, we will be featuring testimonials from some of our newer umpires. First up is Mark Surawski, who started as a PHBA umpire in 2022.
What motivated you to volunteer as an umpire for PHBA?
“Coaching required a skill set I was not prepared for, but umpiring was something I could do during my first year of being a PHBA parent. Umpiring provided me with a way to share baseball with my son and contribute to the PHBA community.”
What are the most rewarding moments while umpiring?
“Umpires are the stewards of the game. It has been an honor to officiate and uphold the traditions of the game I love. PHBA umpires are in a unique position to influence the development of young minds by stressing sportsmanship, teamwork, and community. Selfishly, I have been able to be on the field with my son during his journey, sharing the ‘thrill of victory and the agony of defeat’ strengthening our bond and forming new memories.”
What training and support did you receive, and how did it prepare you for the role?
“The PHBA community is lucky to have an Umpire Leadership Team (ULT) consisting of individuals who put service above self. The ULT provides basic training prior to the start of the season, in-season support, and off season clinics to sharpen umpire mechanics. The ULT understands the demands of calling a game and is willing to work with anyone, at any level, who wants to umpire. Through the generous instruction and support offered by the ULT, I was able to improve my understanding of umpire mechanics, little league rules, and game management skills providing me with the confidence to make the proper calls on the field.”
What would you say to someone who is on the fence about volunteering as an umpire?
“Being an umpire is FUN! Being an umpire is REWARDING! Being an umpire is for the KIDS! Without dedicated umpires, the player experience is incomplete. Help the kids fall in love with the game. Be a part of this wonderful experience by umpiring.”
