PHBA is different from other leagues in two key aspects: every kid plays and we are an all-volunteer non-profit league. Our parents & guardians are critical to the success of the League and community of families. To provide a high level of sportsmanship and play, PHBA established a League Service Hours (LSH) program in order to encourage volunteer participation. This LSH program consists of two distinct volunteer opportunities. One is Team-centered; the second is non-team centered. Each opportunity has their own LSH requirements that need to be met to satisfy a parent/guardian's volunteer responsibilities.

Your League Service Hours commitment contributes to the sense of community at PHBA. We believe your volunteer contributions help us all learn more about baseball & softball - on and off the field as well as support the kids in their ability to learn and play the game of baseball/softball. You’ll make some great new friends and memories as well. While every family has an option to buy out their service hours, your commitment to the League in volunteer hours is worth much more to us than your money.

Below are some of the many opportunities families have to contribute to the League in service hours. There are others that come up throughout the year as well. Once teams are formed, your team manager will request volunteers to complete the team volunteer form. Filling your team's volunteer positions before other non-team volunteer opportunities is a priority to ensure your team's success. If team volunteer slots are filled, other non-team volunteer opportunities (i.e., Opening Day, Photo Day, special events, Parents banquet, etc.) will present themselves throughout the season for you to complete your LSH requirements.

BOARD MEMBER

Running Pleasant Hill Baseball Association takes leadership and decision-making authority. The League is led by a board of directors that includes officers such as president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, head commissioner, chief umpire, volunteer coordinator, and so on. MANAGER/COACH

As a Manager and/or Coach you are the foundation of the team and a critically important element to a child's success and having fun learning and playing the game of baseball or softball. Whether or not you've had experience in coaching, teaching, or playing your child’s sport, PHBA can always use coaching help. If you're willing to learn, PHBA is willing to teach you.

All our kids rely on volunteers to coach them. PHBA has developed an excellent training program to prepare managers and coaches to be a positive influence to the players on their teams as well as preparing the kids on the fundamentals of playing baseball or softball.

To be a Manager/Coach at PHBA the following requirements need to be completed:

Positive Coaching Alliance Training
Complete At Least Two of the Advertised Skills Training clinics

At PHBA, your goal as a Manager/Coach is to teach the kids a love for the game and to have fun doing it.

UMPIRE

The Umpire position is second only to the Manager/Coach position in importance towards filling out team volunteer responsibilities. It is also the most difficult to fill. However, without an umpire, a team's game is not official.
NOTE: Umpires are NOT used in Instructional and Intermediate divisions

Unlike other youth sports programs who pay to have their games officiated, PHBA uses parent volunteers to umpire its games. The League requires each team, from Pioneer through Western divisions, to provide a parent (or parents) volunteer as the team's umpire(s).
NOTE: Failure of a team to provide a team umpire will result in the assessment of the Team Umpire Recruitment Incentive (TURI) fee.

What you say!? Me, an umpire!? Not to fear. Many others before you have voiced similar concerns, doubts, fears, etc. and have weathered the perceived storm. ;o) Many even decide to come back to continue with what they've been taught. This opportunity is a great way to experience the game up close and personal as well as complete your LSH commitment! If you plan to jump into the water as an umpire, you will need to complete the following:

PHBA's Umpire Leadership Team (ULT) takes pride in developing new and beginning umpires (0-2 years experience). We have a strong training and mentoring program to help anyone learn quickly plus have fun umpiring. Whether you're umpiring for the first time or refreshing your skills from past seasons, the ULT's approach to training and supporting mentors ensure you have the skills and confidence necessary to umpire successfully and put your best game on the field for the kids. TEAM COORDINATOR

As a team coordinator, you'll be the main source of communication between the team families and the coach and league. Being a team coordinator may incorporate several of the tasks described below:

Work with manager and coach on team list & e-mails, coordinate practices, handle all volunteers on team to make sure they are doing their jobs right, snack schedule for games, team meetings.
Collect money from each family for team basket, names on jerseys, coaches gifts for end of season party, etc. It's usually best to collect one amount for everything and the earlier the better.
Be sure to give the basket volunteer the amount they need first, so they can get the basket done, and turned in on time.
Coordinate to sign off on the Service Hours.
Coordinate with Photo Day Person and Basket Person.

SCOREKEEPER

Scorekeepers must keep score every game or make sure the duties are done for every game including playoffs. Scorekeeper includes the following tasks:

Intermediate and Instructional Divisions do NOT require scorekeepers.
New scorekeepers are encouraged to attend the Scorekeeper clinic in February (teaches how to keep score). Knowing how to keep score will help learning how to use PHBA's GameChanger app.
New scorekeepers are also encouraged to attend the GameChanger (PHBA's scorekeeping app) clinic (teaches how to use the app)
Both the Home team and Visitor team scorekeepers are responsible for entering and maintaining each of their team's game activities in GameChanger.
Home team scorekeeper is considered the Official Scorekeeper for the game.
For baseball, scorekeepers must check with each other every inning to confirm pitch counts and runs scored for the inning.
For softball, scorekeepers must check with each other every inning to confirm innings pitched and runs scored for the inning.
The Home team scorekeeper is responsible for making sure the end-of-the-game score is correct and pitch counts or innings pitched are correct.
While only one scorekeeper is required per team, it is advisable to have second person as backup.

GAME DAY FIELD PREP

This is a vital role on game day. Games will not be started until the field striped and ready to go. PHBA works hard to provide the best experience for the kids. Making the field look like it is ready for a game to be played is an important part of that playing experience. Game Day Field Prep includes the following tasks:

Attend the Field Prep training clinic in February
Ensure Knack box is open and chalking materials available (chalk, chalking line, chalking machine, mini-spade for uncovering base pegs)
1. Contact Field Crew for missing items
For every game, chalk the field 30 minutes before game start.
Remove rubber base peg locators from base pages (for appropriate division) prior to chalking the baselines.
Return rubber base peg locators to the base pegs after the last game of the day (weeknights and last weekend games only).
Fill in any holes in front of the pitching rubber and batters boxes; install bases.
After the last game of the day, Field prep person puts bases away and locks Knack box (weeknights and last weekend games only).
While only one Field Prep volunteer is required, it is advisable to have at least two for backup.

TEAM BASKET COORDINATOR

Each team creates one basket to be auctioned off at various events throughout the season, including photo day, parent auction, etc. The budget for the team basket varies depending on the donations received from the team families. The team basket coordinator is responsible for the following items:

Work with the Team Coordinator to collect donations from the team parents.
Determine a theme for the team basket
Purchase basket items and secure donations, as applicable
Ensure that their basket is delivered to the event (when their team is responsible for having basket)

SNACK SHACK

Your League Service Hours (LSH) requirement can be fulfilled by working shifts in PHBA's Snack Shack. Shift opportunities are limited and dependent on Snack Shacks hours and resource requirements. If you choose to do your volunteer hours in the Snack Shack, please schedule your time early and check back often as time slots fill up quickly. The following items describe the requirements necessary to fulfill your Service Hours commitment in the Snack Shack:

Must complete 4 hours of volunteer time in Snack Shack.
Sign up for Snack Shack shifts on PHBA's website.
Each volunteer must sign in and have the Snack Shack manager sign you out.
If games are rained out and the snack shack is not open for your assigned shift, no credit will be given for your LSH. You must re-register for another shift on the site or choose a different LSH event to satisfy your service hours.

Snack Shack Sign-Up

Pleasant Hill Baseball Association is an all-volunteer youth Baseball and Softball league. All PHBA families are required to volunteer for either the team-oriented opportunities or the non-team oriented opportunities to complete their League Service Hours (LSH) requirement. The team-oriented opportunities require a parent/adult commitment for the course of the season. The non-team oriented opportunities require a parent/adult commitment of 4 hours per child (maximum of 8 hours for two or more children per family).

To encourage volunteer participation, all families agree at registration to pay a league-determined amount if they fail to complete their League Service Hours. The LSH obligation fee is separate from a player’s annual registration fee, and is only charged if the League Service Hours are not fully met. The LSH obligation fee is $500 per child per family ($1000 max for 2 kids or more per family).

If a player’s League Service Hours are not fully met, an invoice will be sent to the family for the full League Service Hours fee at the end of the season. This LSH fee must be paid before registration in the following year or it will be applied to their next season's registration fee.

It takes a lot of volunteer time to make PHBA successful. Your time is more valuable to our players than your money. However, should you prefer not to volunteer, you may buy out your obligation for $500 per child, with a maximum of $1000 per family.

Team Umpire Recruitment Incentive (TURI)

The Team Umpire Recruitment Incentive (TURI) is a team fee designed to incentivize a team's parents to support their manager/coaches in filling the team-required volunteer umpire position. The TURI fee is $800.

Each team in Pioneer, American, National, and Western division has a 16-game umpire coverage requirement. To meet that requirement teams are required to supply at least one parent volunteer (1) or up to a maximum of four (4) to be their team umpire(s). Each umpire provided must complete a minimum of four (4) games towards satisfying their personal LSH requirement. Completion of the team's 16-game umpire coverage requirement can be achieved by any combination of numbers per umpire once those umpires have met their 4-game LSH requirement. The umpire requirements can be found on the PHBA Umpires page.

Any team failing to provide at least one umpire on their Team Volunteer form at the time of their team gear bag pickup will be required to pay the TURI Fee to get their team's gear bag. The TURI fee is separate from the Registration fee. Failure to pay the TURI fee at the time of gear bag pickup will result in an invoice sent at the end of the season to the team's parents for their portion of the TURI fee (excluding manager/coaches). Failure to pay their portion of the TURI fee before the next season will result in that amount being applied to the next season's registration fee.

Team umpires who fail to complete their 4-game minimum will be assessed the same LSH obligation fee as parent/adult volunteers who fail to complete their 4-hour League Service Hours commitment. An invoice will be sent to the team umpire at the end of the season. Failure to pay the LSH obligation fee before the next season will result in the LSH fee being applied to next season's registration fee.
