President's Letter 2013
PHBA is entering its 55th year of existence. We are getting bigger and better every year due to the strong leadership of our Board and all our volunteers and parents that help our league strive to be the best. I would like to welcome some of our new Board Members. Stephanie Canon to help with the financials; Lisa Mascaro to help with running the web site; Randy Wasner to be leading us as Chief Umpire; and Robin Dooley to head up our apparel and uniform ordering. We couldn't do it without the expertise of each board member, commissioner, coach, umpire and parent volunteer. Thank You!
We are an organization whose motto is "Every Kid Plays"! PHBA realizes that we are in hard times and so we put aside scholarships for kids that want to play but can't afford it. We will work with families to help with the registration cost as well as equipment they might need. We started an Exchange Program where people drop off shoes, gloves, pants, bats etc. that don't fit or are not used anymore and then can be exchanged for a different size. This has been very successful in the past few years and we will continue to do it again this year as an added way to help our PHBA families save money!
PHBA is a non-profit organization. We donate $20.00 per kid to the Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park District to help keep up the Park facilities and maintain the 17 different fields throughout the city. There are always lots of volunteer positions that we need for maintaining these fields.
I am excited to say that this year we will be getting a whole new Pleasant Oaks Park due to the Bond Measure that passed! The park will have a new modern face lift after some 50 years of existence. This will include five brand new full size diamonds and three brand new grass back stop fields. There will also be new pathways, picnic table areas, playground and improved parking lot. We are also trying to build a new storage building approximately 1500 square feet that will house all our equipment. The batting cages will be moved down to PO3 and we will have a larger size for the older kids.
Our traveling programs are thriving. Over the summer the 10 year old boys Hawks team won the California State Championship in LA. Congratulations to Manager Burton Coloma and all the Boys on the Team! This year's boy's tournament hosted by PHBA will be May 30th-June 2nd. The girls traveling side is the Panthers. We have started a new "A" level girls traveling program along with our "B" and "C" level traveling programs too. The girl's tournament this year will be July 19th through the 21st. Teams are coming from all over to our tournaments, which brings in much needed revenue to our league and The City of Pleasant Hill.
Also new this year, the house league is starting up a "Home Run Derby Contest". We are also starting a "Pitch Hit & Run Contest" that is open to all kids throughout the area on Sunday March 17th. This is part of the Major League Baseball Program. Winners will go to a divisional competition and the finalist will go to New York, New York during the all star game. These are a few of the new start up programs that PHBA strives to connect with the kids in the community.
It has been my pleasure to be President of PHBA for the last six years and part of this program for some 25 years (six kids later) and to watch PHBA evolve into one of the best leagues around. Thanks for the memories!
Mark Rolandelli,
President PHBA
Commissioners
